This blog started with coloring for grown-ups and has transmogrified into a blog about journals and journalling.
The thing about journals is they’re not just about writing. They’re about getting feelings out of your head, and this is where coloring for grown-ups comes in.
I’m going to show you my method in this blogpost.
Not everyone is confident to write about their feelings.
If that’s you, how else can you get your feelings out of your head?
Record yourself talking out loud. How else?
Draw Your Feeling.
Use one word for the feeling and draw a line.
One word, one line.
Then use another word and draw another line going in a different direction.
It could be a positive feeling with a line going up or a negative feeling with a line going down.
An “I don’t know what it is” kind of feeling could go from left to right or right to left.
A “Well it could be” kind could be a diagonal line.
I imagine you saying “What the **** is she on about?” Well, this is how I learned to draw a dog. It was a blocky dog but I was so chuffed with it 🙂
I can’t draw but attaching a line to a feeling when I didn’t know how to write about the feeling helped me get it out of my head and onto paper.
I bought some graph paper and I could draw my feelings on there.
Big feelings had long lines and small feelings had short lines.
And then I started making patterns with the lines.
At first they had lots of squares then developed into geometric shapes.
Next came curves.
Angry feelings were straight up and down lines while mellow feelings were curves.
Diagonals were calming down feelings.
Eventually someone showed me how to draw mandalas at www.colormandala.com. That’s where I drew the mandala at the top of the page.
This shows a mix of feelings. The braid round the edge is quite mellow while the twists and tight bits show where I felt tense.
Drawing mandalas like this is how I combat stress. I can get the “grrrr” out of my system and create a belting coloring design.
Coloring for Grown-Ups.
Well, I’m a grown-up. Yes, really 😉
I can get rid of my angst on www.colormandala.com simply creating mandalas and patterns to color.
Some of my journals have mandalas included for people who maybe want to do something different while they think of what to write, or they’re done writing and want to do something else, or they want to get rid of the feelings simply by coloring.
What do you do when you can’t write about your feelings?
