A custom journal is whatever the customer wants it to be. This image is of a custom journal I designed for a lady called Sarah.
What Goes Into A Custom Journal?
Seriously, whatever the customer wants.
Number of pages.
Flourishes on the pages like this:
in the top left corner.
Lined pages or not.
If not, what does the customer want on the pages, if anything? Yes, some people have custom drawing books with blank pages.
Pages with boxes and/or columns on like a planner.
A coloring design every few pages – I am The Coloring Coach, after all 😉
What size of custom journal? To fit in a purse or pocket or to keep on a desk or by a bed?
This, to me, is the most important part.
The cover either says “Ooo-oo! I’m here, open me!” or it says “Yeah, I’m a journal. So what?”
The cover either invites you in or tells you to clear off.
With a custom journal, each stage of the cover has to be shown to the customer.
I’d already shown Sarah the cover with the Art Deco frame and a multi-colored butterfly.
I knew she liked Art Deco so I found an Art Deco style butterfly.
Put the butterfly in the frame with that shade background and she liked it.
Added “Sarah’s Journal” and hoped for the best.
She hasn’t complained.
There’s still time….
If you’re going to use images off the internet, make sure you have the correct Rights for them. You don’t want a Cease & Desist email coming in your inbox from a disgruntled artist.
I chose a different one of these Art Deco/Steampunk style snippets for each page:
These stop a plain lined page being just a plain lined page.
When you open a journal with one of these on the page, your eyes go to it immediately.
The hoped for effect is “Ooo!”
When I use four snippets, I do pages in blocks of four, then maybe add in a coloring design to personalise it further.
I wouldn’t do that for just anybody. I know Sarah likes coloring!
And that’s designing a custom journal The Coloring Coach way 🙂
