1. My designs look great on screen but not so good when I print them off. Why?
Designs on screen are usually 72 dpi (dots per inch) and look fine on screen. Designs for printing need to be minimum 300 dpi because the lines need to be strong and clear.
Where can I find what dpi they are?
In Explorer, right-click on the design and a dropdown menu will appear. Right at the bottom is Properties.
Click on it, go to the Details tab and the #3 section will have Dimensions and Resolution. Resolution is the dpi.
How do I change dpi?
You can do it in most graphics programs. See my next blog post where I’ll be resizing a design and changing the dpi.
2. Which graphics program do you recommend?
It depends on what you want it for. E.g. to make .svg files, I use Inkscape (free), for a kaleidoscope filter to make interesting variations on designs, I use either SumoPaint (free) or Corel Paint Shop Pro (paid for), to insert an image into another image, I use Adobe Photoshop – I know it can be done in Gimp but I find it easier in PS. To make variations on designs I use Kaleidoscope Kreator 3 and Repper Pro.
